It now has three GOTY wins to its name, more than any other publisher. (EA has two, Nintendo has one, and Microsoft has none.) Sony also topped the table of total award wins for an unparalleled fourth time, with Astro Bot’s four wins supplemented by a further two for Helldivers 2. Not bad for a company that warned at the start of the year that it had no major exclusive games coming in 2024.

The game’s visuals aren’t necessarily pushing the PlayStation 5 but they’re flawless and silky smooth, with not a bug in sight. Preorders also let you immediately unlock the Lovestruck Lyricist in-game outfit for Astro, which is based on Parappa The Rapper, immediately at launch. You’ll receive two PSN avatars–one of Astro in his normal outfit and another of him wearing the Parappa getup–and the Glorious Graffiti skin for Astro’s Dual Speeder vehicle. These items can be unlocked in the game without preordering, but buying one of the physical or digital editions early lets you access the outfits and avatars from the jump. Armored Hardcore is the last Astro Bot DLC stage in the Vicious Void galaxy and rewards players with an Assassin’s Creed Cameo Bot. You will have plenty of opportunities to break up Bot Walls as you’re upgrading the Crash Site, but if you’re at the end of the game, go to the entrance of the Ice Temple.

Is it good with cameos yes (not a graveyard indeed), is it good with core mechanics IT OFFERS yes, level design eh the themes are generic. Not a lot of games to compete with in that field, but I’m sure it’s great. @MrMeeeseeeks Many of them are from the defunct Japan Studio that was shut down by Sony in 2021. Those devs are also real gamers with passion and vision who made tons of classic and unique games back then. I’ve grown out of platformers as I’ve aged, but this looks to bring me back! I think I’ll actually buy the game now because it seems absolutely wonderful.

Unfortunately, the future is a bit uncertain for Astro Bot, as Team Asobi hasn’t revealed what’s next after this DLC pack.

You’ll also explore a giant singing tree, a vibrant casino, and the inside of a giant hourglass — all one-and-done ideas. It isn’t just the level’s themes that are varied; many have their own gameplay ideas as well. One later stage involves swapping from day to night, changing the geometry of the level, while an underwater planet adopts a more open design — and equips Astro with a power-up unique to that stage. While there are some recurring themes and mechanics, the overall variety meant we were constantly excited to see what was coming next.

Lost Galaxy Levels

Not only this, but the game even makes use of the controller’s speakers to make the game even more immersive. Astro Bot is, without a shadow of a doubt, this year’s best platforming game. Hell, it could even be a contender for Game of the Year (GOTY) because of how complete the game is as a whole package. The game is visually stunning, has great sound design, has simple yet fun gameplay, makes use of the exclusive PlayStation controls, and, most importantly, has a ton of content.

Since the chameleon starts by shooting fireballs to the left, if you stick to the right side and land next to it, you’ll be able to take it out safely. Once you reach the glass platform, don’t hover as that will break the glass. Doucet made clear that, while Astro Bot may expand beyond PS5, it won’t return to the robot’s roots on PSVR. This isn’t for any malicious reason, of course, but simply because building a “flat screen” game is very different to building one for virtual reality.

Astro Bot Gameplay Overview

Sony is releasing another stream of Astro Bot expansions, the first of which is available today, February 13, adding a total of five new levels and as many special bots. This is joined by a PlayStation 5 Pro patch, which allows the best resolution while running at 60 frames per second. From beloved PS5 pack-in game to Game of the Year winner, Team ASOBI’s ASTRO BOT has achieved gaming’s highest honor at The Game Awards 2024, triumphing over acclaimed titles with its innovative gameplay and creative excellence. Journey through inventive levels filled with surprises, from sticky-tongued frog gloves to mouse-sized adventures. Each stage brings new abilities and challenges, making every moment a delight. Astro Bot represents the pinnacle of PlayStation’s platforming excellence, evolving from its origins in The Playroom VR to become one of gaming’s most beloved mascots.

That being said, Armored Hardcore is almost certainly a reference to Armored Core, while Cock-A-Doodle-Doom is likely Doom, so bots from these franchises are also likely. According to Jamie Smith, Team Asobi’s Principle Animation Director, the animations of Astro and other characters in the game have been drastically increased. These additions enrich the gameplay while further establishing Astro as a character. Seeing Astro take out and play his PS One or being frightened to death in a horror-themed stage adds to his charm in classic mascot character fashion. As the PS5 is still a platform with a relatively mature audience, Sony likely doesn’t have the intention to cement Astro as the system’s one and only mascot. A new iconic character representing your brand through top-quality games couldn’t possibly be a bad thing.

Every level brings something new, and the controls feel perfect. The bright graphics and little PlayStation references make it even better. Overall, it’s a super enjoyable game and definitely worth playing.

You can soak up water then spray it on flaming objects to put them out, similar to Kirby and the Forgotten Land. However, in giant sponge form, Astro Bot can smash through obstacles in a glorious display of destruction. You’ll see this throughout the game and smashing up the world is always a joy.

Use the balloon to float up, activate the mechanism, and destroy the bamboo blocking a secret area. Once cleared, head to the silver platform and double-jump in the edges and use the laser created to light it. After getting the balloon power up from the huge robot, immediately use it to get to the robot’s head to find the hidden bot. Now Team Asobi has been given the chance to unleash all that expertise in playfulness on Astro Bot, a full-scale game that exists for its own ends rather than to serve a Sony marketing plan.
